Dance Gavin Dance is a post-hardcore rock band originating in Sacramento, California, and formed in 2005. However, the only band members that have appeared on every studio album since being lead guitarist Will Swan, and drummer Matt Mingus. Currently, the band's line up also consists of lead singer Tilian Pearson, screamer Jon Mess, and Tim Feerick on the bass guitar. Their first EP Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean was released in 2005, though rereleased in 2006 when the band signed to Rise Records. They have also released many successful albums since going under this label.

Dance Gavin Dance's musical style has been described as post-hardcore, math rock, progressive rock, experimental rock, screamo, and jazz fusion. Some critics have compared the band to post-hardcore peers The Fall of Troy, Alexisonfire, and Circa Survive.
The band has personally cited other bands such as Glassjaw, Earth Wind & Fire, Deftones, Temptations, At the Drive-In, Cursive, Explosions in the Sky, MF Doom, and Radiohead as influences.
